Gigabyte preps passive 9600 GT Green edition

I do not know what to make of these green edition graphics cards. Seems more like a niche marketing plot than anything else to be honest.

The 9600 GT Green Edition cards are based off a 55nm G94 graphics core, and of course have reduced clock speeds, to result to a better energy-efficiency. Gigabyte is readying its first accelerator based on this core, the GV-N96TSL-1GI.

The cooler used on the card will be referred to as “Silent Cell”, and consists of a central GPU contact block from which heatpipes emerge, conveying heat to an aluminum fin array that spans across the full length of the card. Gigabyte mounts 1 GB of GDDR3 across a 256-bit wide bus on the PCB. Well, I;m sure we’ll stub,le into them at CeBIT on display.

I’m just trying to figure out what the heck passive cooling has to do with a card being ‘green’.

59 watt power consumption, not 95 (Ahhhrrrrghh!!)
No need for extra connection, nor(crucially) power from PSU.

Balls to green, the lower wattage means the card produces way less heat, needs less cooling. (cooling from fans requires, yup, more power)
    Sounds pretty green eh?

Who cares, a computer component that produces less than 75 watts can be cooled via Heat Pipes which produce no sound, and can cool way more efficiently than fans, but only to a given temperature.

This information is of little use to gamers who would assemble a computer that pulls more power than a washing machine to achieve the fastest possible performance. (I’m all for seein how fast a computer can go!!)

The card is targeted at the home theater PC and silent PC (music recording, office work) market.

It’s purpose is to deliver optimum performance whilst generating the least possible noise.

I can see no argument for “green” tho it uses less power but is made from copious amounts of copper and aluminium.
Green is just a matter of public opinion.
Christ, the worlds gone mad for wind farms but all that metal will need pullin down in 30 years time!
