it took a while but OCZ finally outed the OCZ Colossus LT SSDs. This little puppy has up-to 1 TB storage, have the newer 34nm NAND flash modules and have 2x64MB cache.

The new model, named Colossus LT, manage to pack up to 1TB in their lightweight, aluminum casing measuring 146 (L) x 101.6 (W) x 25.4mm (H). The Colossus LT Series SSDs are built out of MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash chips, based on the 34nm manufacturing process technology, and (unfortunately) operate on the SATA 3.0Gbps interface. In addition, they have a cache memory of no less than 128MB, boast internal RAID and reach data-transfer rates of 260MB/s both when reading and when writing.

OCZ implemented two Indilinx controllers, indicating that two SSDs simple are setup in RAID0 stripe.

Already available for pre-order, the 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB OCZ Colossus LT SSDs have prices of $399, $799, $1,549 and 2,875 Euro, respectively, and are backed by a three-year warranty.

Upto this point RAID setups did not have support for the TRIM command features in the Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 and Linux 2.6.33+ operating systems.

This made solid state drives rather unsuited for long-term configuration in any RAID setup. Seeing this as a serious limitation, Intel wrote a driver that is able to activate this function even in RAID, obviously the drives themselves need to support it.

This technology provides support for the following features:

* Intel® Rapid Recover Technology
This technology provides full data redundancy by copying data from a designated source drive (i.e., master disk) to a designated destination drive (i.e., recovery disk). Data updates of recovery volumes can be continuous or on request.

* Intel® Rapid RAID
This technology provides the ability to create RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10 volumes on desktop and mobile platforms. Data is distributed across two or more disks to provide data redundancy or to enhance data storage performance.

* Intel® Matrix RAID Technology
This technology allows two independent RAID volumes to be created on a single array. The first volume occupies part of the array, leaving space for the second volume. The array may consist of two to six SATA disks depending on the volume types.

* Volume migration
This feature provides support for converting system data into a high-performance or protection RAID configuration.

* Volume size increase
This feature allows you to increase the data storage capacity of a volume by utilizing 100% of the available array space or by adding one or more SATA disk to an existing volume.
Our application also provides support for the following features: Password-protected disks

This feature provides high-level security and protection for the data on your disks with a password, denying access from any unauthorized user.

* Trim (Microsoft Windows 7* only)

This feature provides support for solid state disks (SSDs) that meet the ATA-8 protocol requirements. This feature optimizes write operations, helps devices reduce wear, and maintains unused storage area on devices as large as possible.

Garbage data from file deletions clutters on the drive. This problem was solved with the invention of the TRIM

The Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (RAID) for Intel Desktop Boards has already been made available for public download from the official website. Of course, end-users will have to actually be running one of the three aforementioned operating systems if they expect the software to work.

Download the driver here

Intel announced the X25-V Value SATA SSD with a capacity of 40GB, this new entry-level disk will retail for around $125. Admittedly, the write performance does disappoint though.

* Sustained Sequential Read: up to 170 MB/s
* Sustained Sequential Write: up to 35 MB/s

The Intel X25-V features 40GB of 34nm NAND flash memory. This non-volatile memory retains data, even when the power is turned off, and is used in applications such as smartphones, personal music players, memory cards or SSDs for fast and reliable storage of data. SSD benefits over a traditional HDD include higher performance, battery saving and ruggedness. “Adding the Intel X25-V to our existing family of high-performance SSDs gives our resellers a full range of high-performing, quality SSDs for notebook upgrades, dual-drive desktop set ups or embedded applications,” said Pete Hazen, director of marketing for the Intel NAND Solutions Group. “SSD adoption continues to be one of the more exciting trends in personal computing, and this entry-level product enables users to enjoy the productivity and performance benefits of Intel SSDs at a new price point.”

The 40GB Intel X25-V complements Intel’s higher performance Intel® X25-M Mainstream SATA SSD product line that offers 80GB and 160GB capacities. All Intel SSDs are designed and manufactured by Intel using its own NAND flash memory from IM Flash Technologies (IMFT) and include a proprietary controller and updatable firmware. The X25-V is priced at $125 for 1,000-unit quantities and is currently stocked and available in worldwide distribution.
