AMD is preparing the release of a liquid cooled version of the FX-8120, which has recently been made available for pre-order by an online store in the US.

This bundle was dubbed the FX-8120 WOX by the chip maker, the WOX suffix at the end of its name pointing out that the processor is shipped together with an AMD-branded water cooler.

Besides the new bundle, the CPU supports the same specs as the regular FX-8120 according to CPU-World, meaning that it includes four Bulldozer modules to deliver a total of eight cores.

These are paired with 8MB of shared Level 3 cache memory and are clocked at 3.1 GHz, but thanks to the addition of the Turbo Core technology the CPU can reach speeds as high as 4GHz when not all cores are active.

The regular version of the FX-8120 comes bundled with an air-cooled fan/heatsink combo and has an MSRP of $205 (about 156 EUR).

In comparison, the new WOX edition FX-8120 CPU retails for $310 US (roughly 236 EUR), which makes it $105 more expensive than its air cooled version. Sadly, the availability date of the FX-8120 WOX is not yet known. Both processors are bundled with the same AMD liquid cooling solution that was developed by Asetek and supports a 120mm radiator and two fans, the latter configured to work in a push-pull mode.

The FX-8150 WOX liquid cooling bundle has an MSRP of $375 (roughly 285 EUR) and is available from various retailers, including Amazon.

Five months after the introduction of the Opteron 6200 and Opteron 4200 processors, AMD is expanding its lineup of server chips based on the Bulldozer architecture with the launch of the single-socket Opteron 3200 series CPUs.

Right now, the Opteron 3200 processor range consists of three SKUs, namely the Opteron 3250, 3260, and 3280.

The first two of these feature dual Bulldozer modules for a total of four processing cores and their clock speeds are set at 2.4GHz and 2.7GHz (2.7GHz and 3GHz maximum Turbo), respectively.

The third chip introduced by AMD today packs eight computing cores with a base clock speed of 2.5GHz and 2.8GHz maximum Turbo. Its TDP is rated at 65 Watts, while the quad-core Opteron 3200 series CPUs fit inside a 45W power envelope.

Compared to their desktop counterparts, these three Opteron processors are validated for being used inside servers and come with an improved memory controller that supports up to 32GB of dual-channel ECC RAM running at speeds of up to 1866MHz.

The Opteron 3200 series targets the dense, power efficient 1P Web hosting/Web server market.

Pricing for the Opteron 3250, 3260, and 3280 CPUs is set at $99, $125, and $229 (75, 94.5 and 173 EUR), respectively. All the chips are shipping right now and are available in platforms from MSI, Tyan, Fujitsu and Dell.

Chipmaker AMD is apparently planning to enter the memory module market in style. The outfit is readying to introduce several DDR3 modules as part of its new Radeon memory line.

Judging by AMD’s own website and some retailer leaks, AMD will introduce three distinct memory module series. Entertainment class modules are rated at 1333MHz (9-9-9 latencies), Ultra Gaming Pro modules run at 1600MHz (11-11-11 latencies) and there’s also the Enterprise series, but it hasn’t been spec’d yet.

The first Radeon memory modules have apparently already gone on sale in Japan.

A couple of US e-tailers have apparently spilled the beans on Llano pricing and there are some rather good points to write home about.

First of all it is a good idea to take the listings with a grain of salt, but in any case the prices are in line with expectations. Take the AMD A6-3600 series for example, it is a quad core 2.1GHz part, somewhat slower than the A6-3650, but it costs about the same as a 3650. However, it is worth noting that the new 3600 is a 65W part and unlike the 3650 it features Turbo, so it can clock to 2.4GHz depending on load.

The A6-3500 triple core is back in the game and at a mere $100 it should offer quite good value for money in its segment. It is basically a 3600 same one core, same clocks, same TDP, same HD 6530D graphics core.

As for the A8 series, the A8-3800 should cost $150. Once again, it is close to the 3850 in terms of pricing, but it is somewhat slower, i.e. 2.4GHz/2.7GHz versus 2.9GHz. However, it’s a 65W part and it features Turbo.

There is still no exact launch date to speak of, but 65W Llanos should appear sometime this quarter.

The guys at Vr.Zone reports that Nvidia is going to release the MCP82 XE chipset later this month where the official marketing name will be nForce 980a SLI. MCP82 XE is essentially the same as the MCP72 XE except that it is qualified to work with the latest AMD3 processors on both DDR2 and DDR3 boards.

MCP82 supports PCIe 2.0, HT 3.0, Tri/Quad SLI, Hybrid SLI, 12 USB 2.0, 6 SATA 3Gb/s ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HD Audio etc. MCP82XE is rated at 20W TDP in mGPU mode, 22W TDP in Hybrid mode and 9W TDP in idle mode.

From the looks of things on April the the rumored 20th AMD Phenom II X4 955 might become available. A good call fro AMD to introduce faster clocked parts.

The X4 955 would be launched with a clock frequency of 3.2GHz AMD’s making it AMD’s fastest quadcore, the processor would get 6MB L3-cache, 2MB L2-cache and of course would be seated on socket AM3. AMD might simply cancel that 950, as it turns out, AMDs yields are much better then expected. The X4 955 would get a maximum 125W TPD.

A very interesting price/value processor we think.

On an air cooler that is … XtremeSystems forum member Dumo got his hands on a sample of the upcoming AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor, this 125W TDP part has a clockspeed of 3.2GHz.

By increasing the voltage from 1.25V to 1.45, the overclocked got the chip to 4GHz on air cooling.

The test system consisted of an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard, 2GB DDR3 memory clocked at 1666MHz and the Windows 7 Beta operating system.

Intel has threatened AMD with the termination of their x86 cross-licensing agreement, after AMD revealed its intention to spin out chip manufacturing.

The agreement – which sees AMD make PC and server CPUs using x86 architecture licensed from Intel – is believed to include a clause whereby AMD are required to manufacturer a certain proportion of chips in-house.

“Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (the “Company”) has received correspondence from Intel Corporation (“Intel”) related to the 2001 Patent Cross License Agreement between the Company and Intel (the “Cross License”). In this correspondence, Intel (i) alleges that the Company has committed a material breach of the Cross License through the creation of the Company’s GLOBALFOUNDRIES joint venture and (ii) purports to terminate the Company’s rights and licenses under the Cross License in 60 days if the alleged breach has not been corrected”

AMD had informed company investors that the Global Foundries deal would not impact the Intel license, a reassurance that now seems premature given that Intel are alleging “material breach of the cross license”. In response, AMD have accused Intel of violating the agreement terms by threatening termination.

AMD now has 60 days to “correct” the alleged breach, but is more likely to take the case to court. Given the secret nature of the licensing agreement, it’s unlikely that many details will emerge from the legal battle.

Yesterday another rumor surfaced on the web regarding the fact that the ATI Radeon HD 4870 would receive yet another price drop, on top of the already announced price drop.

To sum it up a little better. It looks like that the Radeon HD 4870 1GB card will drop towards US$179. By making this move the Radeon HD 4870 1GB will be US$20 cheaper compared towards GeForce GTX 260 which had its price cut only recently from US$239 to $199.

These (both) are extremely good value prices guys. The cards offer a truckload of performance and features.

Update:
As it seems now it is the GeForce GTX 260 that is expected to get the price cut, sending its price down to $179, not the Radeon HD 4870 1GB. Confusing yes, fun .. yes !
