AMD has revealed its newest workstation-class graphics card, the ATI FirePro V9800. It flaunts 4GB of GDDR5 RAM and 1,600 stream processors, while supporting maximum resolutions of 2,560×1,600 at 60Hz. The design is an evolution of the FirePro V8800, with double the RAM and improvements in power and efficiency.

There are otherwise six Mini DisplayPort outputs, with the connected displays driven by ATI EyeFinity. Support for DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.0 and ATI CrossFire Pro is ensured, and the card gets a 256-bit memory interface. The same Cyprus GPU is used as in the V8800, but it’s faster in this application at 2.72 terraflops as opposed to 2.64. Power usage is lower, at less than 225W.

The card is priced at $3,499

It was rumored a couple of days ago already, but it seems to be somewhat confirmed. AMD wants to merge the CPU and GPU products under one brand, so you can expect the Radeon and FirePro series logo’s to be removed in the nearby future.

Volkmann, AMD’s vice president of global corporate marketing told THINQ the following:

“It’s literally the standard battery of questions: Are you aware of this brand? Would you consider it? And then we ask a very specific form of a preference question.”
“The Radeon brand and the ATI brand are equally strong with respect to conveying our graphics processor offering,” he goes on to saying.
“[The] combination of AMD and Radeon actually proved to be a stronger combination than ATI and Radeon in the minds of processor-aware consumers, by a statistically significant amount.”

We assume products with the new branding on the market this year already.
