It’s making-fun-of-audiophiles-time again! We never cease to be amused by what passes as acceptable marketing material when trying to justify astronomic price tags of some high end audio equipment. Take these $2,750 Edition 10 headphones from Ultrasone:

Green is the word and common denominator here alright. Razer just announced their Orca headphones.

According to the company, this is their foray into the lifestyle audio world. Furthermore, the company designed the Orca headphones to focus on comfort and audio quality first and foremost, but also give the ability for gamers to enjoy them in their mindless fun, and then take them out into the world without sacrificing sound or comfort. And then there’s that Razer neon green color, which will either attract plenty of people, or make them run away with their eyes covered by their hands.

The Orca headphones are meant for the European region only, at first, with the company announcing that the headphones will appear in the market some time in the third quarter of this year. They’ll be priced at about 60 Euros, or £50. No word on an international release quite yet, but we can imagine that seeing these green headphones around here in the next few months won’t surprise us at all.

First announced at CES 2009 nearly 1.5 years ago, the 5.1 surround sound gaming cans from Psyko are now finally heading to retail stores across North America. This headset is radically different from other surround sound headsets as the five speakers are not placed in the ear cups, but above your head in the bridge of the headset to provide a more natural sound experience.

Subwoofers are located in the ear cups, and the headset also features a removable microphone and a separate headphone amplifier box with volume and bass level controls. It should be available in retail stores for around $299.99.

While the PsykoWave Technology sounds pretty impressive, arecent review indicates this headset isn’t really worth its money. The headset does deliver pretty impressive positional accuracy, but the reviewer complains the sound quality is atrocious, and notes even his $33 Koss PortaPro headphones boast higher fidelity.

Creative has announced a couple of pairs of new earbuds – the HS-930i and the Aurvana In-Ear 2s. The former is designed for the iPhone and features an in-line microphone, and the latter are an update of the original Aurvana In-Ears.

Looking first at the Aurvana earbuds, Creative says that the new version “sports bolder aesthetics and more refined acoustic tuning”. You won’t see much of those aesthetics when they’re stuck in your ears, but we applaud the principle nonetheless. On the acoustic tuning side, there’s now a grille on the back of the buds that should offer a little more detail in the sonic presentation. They’re bassy – offering a frequency response of 15Hz to 16kHz, and have an impedance of 42 ohms and a sensitivity of 110 dB/mW.

The Aurvana In-Ear 2s are made of metal, and come with an oxygen-free copper cable, gold-plated plug and a slider that can adjust the length of that cable to minimize impact noise. They also come with a travel case that includes a cleaning tool, airplane adapter and various different sized earbuds.

Over to the HS-930i, which we reckon looks rather more stylish than the Aurvana. There is a metal housing that can rotate to allow you to loop the cables back over your ears, and there’s also an in-line microphone with a button that’ll allow you to answer and hang up phone calls without taking your phone out of your pocket.

If you’d rather use them with your computer, they come with a PC adapter to convert the 4-pole jack into both a headphone jack and a microphone jack. On the specs side, they contain a 6mm Neodymium driver that pumps out a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz with an impedance of 16 ohms and a sensitivity of 105dB/mW.

Both sets of earbuds cost $149.00, and they’re available now from Creative’s online store.

Slick, but very expensive. Bose introduced the QuietComfort 15, its latest noise-canceling headphones. The headphones boast new sound-reduction technology that is claimed to offer improved attenuation in loud environments, while expanding the correction across a wider range of frequencies.

The revamped system utilizes microphones placed on both the outside and inside of the earcup, enabling more effective measurements to produce the opposing cancellation signal. Along with the improvements to active cancellation, Bose also integrates new materials to enhance the passive noise reduction.

Like the company’s other QuietComfort headphones, the QC15 integrates TriPort venting that is claimed to increase low-frequency output without artificially boosting the audio signal. Users can also remove the cable to take advantage of the noise cancellation without listening to audio.

Power is provided by a single AAA battery, similarly to the QC2, instead of the proprietary rechargeable battery of the QC3. Bose claims the battery life extends to 35 hours, while a green LED begins flashing through the last five hours.

The QC15 will replace the QC2 model, while retaining the same retail price of $300. Customers will be able to purchase the headphones beginning August 20th.
