MSI Europe showed a nice screenshot of Elmor’s latest overclocking feat and overclocking experience with MSI’s recently announced HD 7970 Lightning card.

MSI’s Radeon HD 7970 Lightning overclocked up to 1800MHz for the GPU. Apparently all it took was some LN2 and Swedish overclocker Elmor, which proved his OC skills at various overclocking events.

The card was normally chilled by LN2 and stable core clock ended up at 1800MHz with 1700mV of voltage. Memory ended up at impressive 1925MHz (7.7GHz effective). Elmor used MSI’s Big Bang XPower II X79 motherboard and Intel Core i7 3960X Sandy Bridge-E CPU overclocked to 5207.8MHz. The 3DMark 11 score ended at 15035 marks in Performance mode.

MSI has definitely made dream graphics card for any overclocker and that custom PCB is surely doing a nice job.

Intel isn’t offering a whole lot of details on this one just yet, but the company has let out an early word of a new and improved SIMD Accelerator it’s currently working on, which promises to boost the graphics performance of MIDs while also consuming ten times less power than the accelerators now used.

The SIMD itself (or Single Instruction, Multiple Data) works by executing multiple computing instructions at once, while apparently allows for onscreen graphic images to be “done faster.” Of course, Intel isn’t saying at all about an actual release just yet, but it does say that the project is “aimed at enhancing future Intel products,” so it seems reasonable to assume that it’ll eventually find its way into a standard MID platform.

Intel has threatened AMD with the termination of their x86 cross-licensing agreement, after AMD revealed its intention to spin out chip manufacturing.

The agreement – which sees AMD make PC and server CPUs using x86 architecture licensed from Intel – is believed to include a clause whereby AMD are required to manufacturer a certain proportion of chips in-house.

“Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (the “Company”) has received correspondence from Intel Corporation (“Intel”) related to the 2001 Patent Cross License Agreement between the Company and Intel (the “Cross License”). In this correspondence, Intel (i) alleges that the Company has committed a material breach of the Cross License through the creation of the Company’s GLOBALFOUNDRIES joint venture and (ii) purports to terminate the Company’s rights and licenses under the Cross License in 60 days if the alleged breach has not been corrected”

AMD had informed company investors that the Global Foundries deal would not impact the Intel license, a reassurance that now seems premature given that Intel are alleging “material breach of the cross license”. In response, AMD have accused Intel of violating the agreement terms by threatening termination.

AMD now has 60 days to “correct” the alleged breach, but is more likely to take the case to court. Given the secret nature of the licensing agreement, it’s unlikely that many details will emerge from the legal battle.

Over at fudzilla they received an answer from Intel regarding the matter if Intel’s GN40 Atom chipset can do 1080p HD video playbck. The answer seems to be … ‘some HD support’.

“GN40 is designed to do 1080P HD playback for typical broadband internet content; it is not designed to enable full Blu-ray capability where the bitrates and demands of multi-layer content are significantly higher than that of internet HD content.”

The way we understand this statement is that some 1080P content from the internet might have a chance, but not as extensive as the one you find on Blu-ray discs. We are quite sure that Microsoft’s 1080P WMV file format should work, while 1080P decoding of H.264 and VC1 might not.

With the expansion of the existing Z5xx series of its Atom processor platform, Intel plans to address the growing segment of embedded computing, such as in-vehicle infotainment, medical, retail and transaction solutions (kiosks, point-of-service terminals), gaming and industrial control and automation. Apparently, they added four new single-core processors to the current line-up, about which not much information was released, so far.

The Z520PT, for example, is a 1.3 Ghz CPU, has 512 KB of L2 cache, uses only 2.2 Watts, and works in a temperature range of -40 to +85° C. These new CPUs will be available in the second quarter of 2009.

If accurate, a new leak has NVIDIA releasing an updated version of its Ion platform with support for more than just netbook processors.

As part of a presentation that responds to Intel horribly lame criticism of Ion, NVIDIA has acknowledged that it will launch a second-generation version that supports not only the Atom and VIA Nano but also regular Celeron, Pentium and Core 2 chips. The update would allow full-speed notebooks to use the smaller footprint.

The company sees Ion 2 shipping in the fall and partly positions the integrated graphics and system controller chip as an alternative to the upcoming Pineview generation of Atom processors, which will get integrated graphics and memory controllers. NVIDIA believes the new option “forces” netbook and nettop makers to use Intel’s graphics despite relatively little improvement.

In defending Ion, the video hardware designer also refutes claims that Ion has “no advantages” over Intel graphics and higher power consumption, showing benchmarks which match the 10X graphics performance boost assertions and noting that a typical Atom-plus-Ion configuration only uses about a half-watt more of power versus the Intel reference version.

The first official customer for Ion is rumored to be Lenovo, with companies like Apple and veteran netbook producers also expressing interest.

This is a funny fact, and sure .. quite an accomplishment when you think about it. Intel unveiled on its website that each of the 45nm transistors in the upcoming 8-core Xeon processors uses 1/7,000th the power and takes up 1/40,000th the area of the original 4004 transistors that Intel was manufacturing in 1971:

”Each of the 45nm transistors in the upcoming 8-core Intel® Xeon® processor uses 1/7000th the power of the original 4004 transistors that Intel was manufacturing in 1971 – quite a statement in energy efficiency. If the fuel efficiency of automobiles had improved at the same rate, a car would get 200,000 miles per gallon. You could put one gallon in your tank when you first purchase a car and never have to stop at a gas station again for the life of the car, and still have plenty of fuel to spare. And each transistor today takes up 1/40,000th the area of the transistors in the 4004”.

Intel filed a lawsuit against Nvidia late on Monday, alleging that the two companies’ current four-year-old chipset license agreement does not extend to Intel’s upcoming CPUs with “integrated” memory controllers.

NVIDIA entered into the agreement in 2004 in order to bring platform innovations to Intel CPU based systems. In return, Intel took a license to NVIDIA’s rich portfolio of 3D, GPU, and other computing patents. Since signing the agreement, NVIDIA has offered innovations such as SLI, Hybrid power, and CUDA parallel processing. ION, the most recent innovation, integrates a powerful NVIDIA GPU, north bridge and south bridge into one compact die. When combined with a CPU, ION enables a two-chip PC architecture for Intel processors two years ahead of Intel’s own solution. In addition, the ION platform offers 10x the performance of Intel’s current three chip design.

The industry and consumers now count on innovations from NVIDIA. Microsoft recently endorsed ION because it offers consumers the first truly affordable premium Windows experience. Late last year Apple selected NVIDIA’s chipset for its entire new line of notebooks including the MacBook Classic, MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro. Today, companies like Acer, Alienware, Asus, Dell, Falcon Northwest, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, NEC, and Toshiba all ship exciting innovations created by NVIDIA as a result of its agreement with Intel.

Huang said that, given the broad and growing adoption of NVIDIA’s platform innovations, it is not surprising that Intel is now initiating a dispute over a contract signed four years ago. Innovations like ION, SLI, Hybrid power, and CUDA threaten Intel’s ability to control the PC platform.
