MSI Europe showed a nice screenshot of Elmor’s latest overclocking feat and overclocking experience with MSI’s recently announced HD 7970 Lightning card.

MSI’s Radeon HD 7970 Lightning overclocked up to 1800MHz for the GPU. Apparently all it took was some LN2 and Swedish overclocker Elmor, which proved his OC skills at various overclocking events.

The card was normally chilled by LN2 and stable core clock ended up at 1800MHz with 1700mV of voltage. Memory ended up at impressive 1925MHz (7.7GHz effective). Elmor used MSI’s Big Bang XPower II X79 motherboard and Intel Core i7 3960X Sandy Bridge-E CPU overclocked to 5207.8MHz. The 3DMark 11 score ended at 15035 marks in Performance mode.

MSI has definitely made dream graphics card for any overclocker and that custom PCB is surely doing a nice job.

Five months after the introduction of the Opteron 6200 and Opteron 4200 processors, AMD is expanding its lineup of server chips based on the Bulldozer architecture with the launch of the single-socket Opteron 3200 series CPUs.

Right now, the Opteron 3200 processor range consists of three SKUs, namely the Opteron 3250, 3260, and 3280.

The first two of these feature dual Bulldozer modules for a total of four processing cores and their clock speeds are set at 2.4GHz and 2.7GHz (2.7GHz and 3GHz maximum Turbo), respectively.

The third chip introduced by AMD today packs eight computing cores with a base clock speed of 2.5GHz and 2.8GHz maximum Turbo. Its TDP is rated at 65 Watts, while the quad-core Opteron 3200 series CPUs fit inside a 45W power envelope.

Compared to their desktop counterparts, these three Opteron processors are validated for being used inside servers and come with an improved memory controller that supports up to 32GB of dual-channel ECC RAM running at speeds of up to 1866MHz.

The Opteron 3200 series targets the dense, power efficient 1P Web hosting/Web server market.

“In today’s economic environment, dedicated hosting providers need their data centers to become profit centers faster than ever,” said Patrick Patla, corporate vice president and general manager, commercial business, AMD.

“With the new AMD Opteron 3000 Series platform, Web and Cloud customers no longer have to compromise with desktop-class platforms in order to hit certain price points.

“Now they have all the benefits of a true server-class product at desktop-class price points. This helps rapidly-growing hosting customers achieve fast payback in their incredibly dense, power-efficient environments,” concluded the company’s rep.

Pricing for the Opteron 3250, 3260, and 3280 CPUs is set at $99, $125, and $229 (75, 94.5 and 173 EUR), respectively. All the chips are shipping right now and are available in platforms from MSI, Tyan, Fujitsu and Dell.

MSI just launched a new GeForce GTX 480, this is the Lightning edition that has been pimped up and equipped for extreme overclocking, especially with sub-zero cooling like LN2.

The GF100 based card has a total of 16 phases PWM opposed to the regular 8th. The cooler is called the Twin frozr III model and is aluminum and comes with 2x 90mm fans. The card is clocked at 750 MHz GPU, 1500Mhz on CUDA cores and 1000MHz on the memory (4GHz GDDR5).

Since the card is targeted against the overclockers, there are also a number of switches for allowing extreme temperatures increase voltage limitations and an OCP unlocker switch and a PWM Clock Tuner. That comes with a dual BIOS should you mess up one during a tweaking project. A page at MSI’s website accidentally reveals details about AMD’s upcoming triple and quad-core Athlon II CPUs.

All of these processors have one thing in common: they lack L3 cache, unlike their Phenom II brethren. (Even the dual-core Phenom II X2 550 carries 6MB of L3.) That omission should translate into lower clock-for-clock performance than triple- and quad-core Phenom IIs, but also lower prices. Reports from a few months back suggest that AMD may introduce these new CPUs in September.

MSI has introduced the N250GTS Twin Frozr 1G OC and N250GTS Twin Frozr 512MB OC graphics cards.

Military Class components – Hi-c CAP

MSI now has officially announced their new R4890 Cyclone SOC, which brings ATI’s Radeon HD 4890 core towards 1GHz on its 800 stream processors and 1GB of GDDR5 256-bit memory.

Since cooling takes some effort, there’s also a huge 10cm fan with four 8mm heatpipes to be found on it. That makes for the biggest fan on an HD 4890-based video card to date, and a setup which MSI claim is far quieter than rival systems.

The company is also saying that the R4890 Cyclone will last longer, as it uses “military class” components; namely the SSC (Solid State Chock), which reduces high-frequency noise and apparently makes overclocking more stable, the solid CAP, and the Hi-c CAP. The latter both reduces power consumption thanks to greater efficiency and, MSI claim, lasts over 200 years at regular 65-degree operating temperatures. Whether you’ll still be using your MSI R4890 Cyclone in 200 years is obviously beside the point.

Elsewhere there’s a dual-link DVI output, HDMI and included DVI-to-VGA adapter, and the card supports HDCP and maximum display sizes of 2560 x 1600. The MSI R4890 Cyclone SOC should be available starting within two weeks with an estimated sales price of roughly 189 EUR.

MSI’s WindBox DE200 has undergone some serious changes in the last couple of months. According to the gang over at TechConnect Magazine the new box has shed the Celeron CPU and nVidia graphics and gone for the more traditional “net” hardware of a single core Atom, and 945GC board.

No word on why this has happened but the changes should be the final version and what well will see at its Computex 2009 launch.

In addition to the hardware changes the physical design seems to have been adjusted and is not as sleek as the previous version shown at CeBit.

Seen below in its new form, the nettop seems less sleek than the first iteration but is still quite compact and it no longer uses a Celeron CPU, or an Nvidia GeForce 9400 motherboard, but an Atom 230 (single-core, 1.6GHz) and a 945GC board.

The DE200 also boasts less RAM than the CeBIT version – 1GB, and has an 160GB hard drive, WiFi, Ethernet, D-Sub and HDMI outputs and one of four funky colors – black, white, blue and red. Expect more details, like the release date, next week at Computex.

The time to experience the most shocking realism in gaming is NOW!

An interesting rumor has sprung up over at Fudzilla. It seems that MSI might be looking to drop some AMD love under the hood of their X-Slim series.

In the smaller models you will still find Atom and Intel due to poor thermal properties of the Yukon but that does not mean you won’t be able to get your AMD fix in a thin and light from MSI.

It seems MSI is working on the X410 and X610, both Yukon based. Both should be available with AMD IGPs, as well as discrete HD 4330 graphics with 512MB of memory. However, you won’t find AMD chips in smaller models, probably due to unfavorable thermals. At this point we’re not sure about dual-core Congo CPUs either.

No release date has been set, and all we know is that AMD-based X-Slims were originally planned for launch later in the year, probably late Q3 or early Q4. As this timefaime is quite a long way off, things could change, so take this with a grain of salt.
