The guys at Vr.Zone reports that Nvidia is going to release the MCP82 XE chipset later this month where the official marketing name will be nForce 980a SLI. MCP82 XE is essentially the same as the MCP72 XE except that it is qualified to work with the latest AMD3 processors on both DDR2 and DDR3 boards.

MCP82 supports PCIe 2.0, HT 3.0, Tri/Quad SLI, Hybrid SLI, 12 USB 2.0, 6 SATA 3Gb/s ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HD Audio etc. MCP82XE is rated at 20W TDP in mGPU mode, 22W TDP in Hybrid mode and 9W TDP in idle mode.

As you guys know NVIDIA has been on a renaming streak lately. The GeForce 9800 GTX+ received a transformation towards GeForce GTS 250.

There however was supposed to be another model getting a makeover. The 9800 GT supposedly was to be rebranded towards GeForce GTS 240. Apparently that isn’t happening anymore. Either way at 149 USD the GTS 250 is a very sound buy of course.

Even most AIBs are a little puzzled, but it is confirmed that there will be no GeForce GTS 240. As to whay that is ? No clue.

Now if we’d ask NVIDIA about this product, they’d say .. GTS 240 ? That product never existed.

Sure sure ..

Over the past few weeks we have heard may many rumours about ATI releasing a Radeon HD 4890 (RV790) next month. But it’s semi confirmed that NVIDIA is not sitting still either.

Deep inside the gossip channel we heard that NVIDIA is preparing a GeForce GTX 275. The product would merely be a faster clocked GTX 260 SP216 (at least that is the rumor). Early speculation makes us think that the core clock frequency of this product would be 650 MHz (576 standard) with a 1100 MHz memory clock (1000 standard), we do not have any numbers on the shader domain though. But assume the normal and do some quick math and you’ll end up with 10-15% additional performance, bringing it actually close to the GeForce GTX 285 performance wise.

On the other side of the scope, the latest rumour on the Radeon HD 4890 release date we last heard is April 6th. We also think that the HD 4890 will not be able to beat the GeForce GTX 285 performance wise. And this is why NVIDIA would launch the GTX 275 shortly after that product, to counteract ATI’s move.

Both product are unconfirmed and neither ATI or NVIDIA does know about their existence, of course.

At the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco yesterday, the company revealed that it had plans to enter the x86 processor market by building a x86 compatible system-on-chip in the next two to three years.

According to Michael Hara, NVIDIA’s senior vice president of investor relations and communications, the company is considering making a x86 processor in the next two or three years:

The heart of this issue is that the CPU has run its course and the soul of the PC is shifting quickly to the GPU.

If that’s true, Jen-Hsun, then why bother developing an x86 CPU? The answer, of course, is that Jen-Hsun knows his comments are little more than BS. Granted, there’s little indication that graphics processing will migrate back to CPU, in spite of a seeming plateau in mainstream applications’ polygon and pixel demands. GPUs also fill an important role in handling video processing in a speedy and power-thrifty manner. And there’s some possibility, though by no means a guarantee, that over time GPUs will take over additional functions amenable to their massively parallel processing nature, by virtue of coming-soon APIs such as OpenCL and DirectX 11. But for anyone who thinks that the GPU will obsolete the CPU or even tangibly retard its advancements in the future, I have seven words for you:

I’d like some of whatever you’re smoking.

Assuming my between-the-lines reading of Hara’s teasing is on track, where will Nvidia’s x86 capabilities come from? While I was pulling an April Fool’s joke when I ‘announced’ last year that Nvidia was buying AMD, the idea of Nvidia acquiring Via has been bantered about in the press for quite some time. There’s a problem with that prognosis, however, and it’s a biggie: Via’s x86 license isn’t capable of being adopted by an acquiring entity. Nvidia could try to do a straight-up x86 design, but (barring FTC pressure, which is perhaps what Nvidia’s gambling on), I can’t imagine a scenario in which Intel would grant its competitor a license. Emulation is also a possibility, but the track record here is spotty at best; Montalvo Systems flamed out before it ever produced its first chip, and Transmeta did little better, at least in the marketplace (in the courts, on the other hand, it fared somewhat better).

Nero today previewed the newest version of Nero Move it which now features support for the NVIDIA CUDA architecture at the CeBIT trade fair.

Available as a free update to current Nero Move it customers in April, this new feature includes accelerated video encoding times and a decrease in CPU usage. By using CUDA technology to tap the massively parallel processing power of NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) Nero Move it makes tasks such as customizing a HD video for an iPod, go from hours to minutes. Even more time will be saved when creating full HD video content in the H.264 video compression standard.

“Nero Move it is designed to allow consumers to effortlessly convert and share digital media content among a variety of popular entertainment devices. Shifting specific video processing tasks from the CPU to the GPU enables consumers to complete their content transfers in a fraction of the time,” said Michael Steele, General Manager of Visual Consumer Solutions at NVIDIA. “People now expect to interact with technology in a more natural and visually appealing way. Mobile Phones

NVIDIA have officially announced the new GeForce GTX 280M, one of four fresh mobile GPUs. The GTX 280M apparently offers up to 50-percent more performance than its last-gen “enthusiast laptop GPUs”, with support for CUDA and PhysX gaming effects.

The 280M is joined by the GeForce GTX 260M, GTS 160M and GTS 150M. Of course, having read NVIDIA’s press release (below), we’re now wondering why Clevo didn’t bite the bullet and slot two GTX 280M GPUs in there, since the chip supports NVIDIA SLI.

NVIDIA describe the two GTX GPUs as for “enthusiast” notebooks, which usually means gaming or video crunching, while the GTS chips are for “high-performance, sleek notebooks” such as gutsy ultraportables. As well as Clevo, ASUS and MSI will be showing products using one or more of the GPUs; no news on eventual pricing, however.

Included in the group is the fastest notebook GPU in the market, the GeForce GTX 280M, with up to 50% more performance than previous generation enthusiast notebook GPUs.

“These new NVIDIA GeForce GPUs are for those who won’t accept compromise in notebook performance,” said Rene Haas, general manager of notebook business at NVIDIA. “These new GPUs meet the needs of the most demanding consumers in the marketplace by delivering industry-leading performance at all price segments along with features that go beyond graphics.”

If accurate, a new leak has NVIDIA releasing an updated version of its Ion platform with support for more than just netbook processors.

As part of a presentation that responds to Intel horribly lame criticism of Ion, NVIDIA has acknowledged that it will launch a second-generation version that supports not only the Atom and VIA Nano but also regular Celeron, Pentium and Core 2 chips. The update would allow full-speed notebooks to use the smaller footprint.

The company sees Ion 2 shipping in the fall and partly positions the integrated graphics and system controller chip as an alternative to the upcoming Pineview generation of Atom processors, which will get integrated graphics and memory controllers. NVIDIA believes the new option “forces” netbook and nettop makers to use Intel’s graphics despite relatively little improvement.

In defending Ion, the video hardware designer also refutes claims that Ion has “no advantages” over Intel graphics and higher power consumption, showing benchmarks which match the 10X graphics performance boost assertions and noting that a typical Atom-plus-Ion configuration only uses about a half-watt more of power versus the Intel reference version.

The first official customer for Ion is rumored to be Lenovo, with companies like Apple and veteran netbook producers also expressing interest.
