MSI Europe showed a nice screenshot of Elmor’s latest overclocking feat and overclocking experience with MSI’s recently announced HD 7970 Lightning card.

MSI’s Radeon HD 7970 Lightning overclocked up to 1800MHz for the GPU. Apparently all it took was some LN2 and Swedish overclocker Elmor, which proved his OC skills at various overclocking events.

The card was normally chilled by LN2 and stable core clock ended up at 1800MHz with 1700mV of voltage. Memory ended up at impressive 1925MHz (7.7GHz effective). Elmor used MSI’s Big Bang XPower II X79 motherboard and Intel Core i7 3960X Sandy Bridge-E CPU overclocked to 5207.8MHz. The 3DMark 11 score ended at 15035 marks in Performance mode.

MSI has definitely made dream graphics card for any overclocker and that custom PCB is surely doing a nice job.

ATI is to fight off NVIDIA’s rebranding (today’s released GTS 250) with better pricing. Sources say that ATI, the graphics division of AMD, is working with its board partners and several major e-tailers to lower prices on some key products.

The ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB will drop $50 in price, from the $199 segment down to $149.

It will compete in this price point primarily against NVIDIA’s GTS 250 1GB rebrand using the old G92 chip, variants of which were used in the 8800GT, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, etc. However, the HD 4870 has been shown to surpass the performance of NVIDIA’s GTX 260 line, and value seekers may choose to leave NVIDIA for a better price/performance point.”

Photo’s appeared of what could be the GeForce GTX 580. The GTX 580 is going to be unleashed next month to compete with the upcoming Radeon HD 6970 (Cayman). According to rumors the GTX 580 would be 20% faster than the GTX 480. The product would be based on the GF110 silicon which has 512 active shader processors. Furthermore you can expect a 512-bit memory bus.

It was rumored a couple of days ago already, but it seems to be somewhat confirmed. AMD wants to merge the CPU and GPU products under one brand, so you can expect the Radeon and FirePro series logo’s to be removed in the nearby future.

Volkmann, AMD’s vice president of global corporate marketing told THINQ the following:

“It’s literally the standard battery of questions: Are you aware of this brand? Would you consider it? And then we ask a very specific form of a preference question.”
“The Radeon brand and the ATI brand are equally strong with respect to conveying our graphics processor offering,” he goes on to saying.
“[The] combination of AMD and Radeon actually proved to be a stronger combination than ATI and Radeon in the minds of processor-aware consumers, by a statistically significant amount.”

We assume products with the new branding on the market this year already.

Rumors are all over the web regarding the pending release of ATI’s Radeon 5800 series DX11 class graphics cards. We ‘think’ that the first released card will be the Radeon HD 5870 which is developed under codename Cypress.

From what we heard is that this card will be lined up directly against the GeForce GTX 285 pricing wise, the rumor is that this high-end DX11 class graphics card will get a price tag of 299 USD.

Though I personally doubt it a little given the issues with the 40nm node, there is a a rumor that this graphics card would be based on a 40nm fabrication process.
