Samsung has developed a 1.5 TB three platter hard disk drive (500 GB per platter) which consumes 40% less power at idle, and 45% less power when reading/writing than other comparable drives.

Dubbed F2EG EcoGreen, the drive is comparably priced to high-power consuming drives.

As hard disk capacity increases from an increased number of disks, so does power consumption. However, Samsung’s F2EG drive offers low power consumption by using EcoTriangle™, a low-power, low-heat, low-noise operation technology. With its advanced design and fewer components, the F2EG drive is 40% lower in power consumption in idle mode and 45% lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. Samsung’s Eco-Triangle™ technology offers more energy efficient and high performance hard drive options to manufacturers of home media PC, external HDD, set-top box, and personal NAS.

Samsung’s EcoGreen F2EG drive, which is suitable for both external hard disks and desktop PC, incorporates 500GB/1TB/1.5TB capacity, 16MB/32MB buffer memory, and 3.0 gigabytes per second (Gbps) Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interface. The F2EG hard drive, employing advanced PMR technology, achieves greater aerial density and improves transfer performance as well. The F2EG family of drives is currently being shipped to major OEM businesses. The 1.5TB HDD is available at $149.00 MSRP.

The Q1EX-71G UMPC from Samsung is the successor of the Q1 Ultra and packs in quite a few interesting features. Weighing less than 1.5 lbs, it measures 9″ W x 5″ H x 1″ D. It has a 7″ touchscreen display which supports a resolution of up to 1024 x 600 and 300 nits of brightness. The roughly 4.5 hours of battery life on the standard Li-Ion battery and up to 8.5 hours on the extended-life battery are a nice and welcome improvement, too.

The Q1EX-71G offers 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, a dual array microphone for making phone calls over the Web using VoIP, 2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz RAM, a 60GB HDD, and a VIA Nano ULV U2500 processor running at 1.2GHz. Operating system is the Tablet Edition of Windows XP. Last but not least: it is already available online for 749.99 USD.

Samsung have announced their latest Dual-Sim handset, the C5212, which has been priced at a shade under $200, $194/€152, give or take. Going by this, the C5212 seems to be the company’s most affordable Dual-Sim-capable handset, to date.

Of course, the C5212, being a Dual-Sim handset, lets you use two seperate SIM cards, at the same time, with both slots operating on the 900/1800MHz bands. As for a release date, the C5212 will be available to purchase in selected markets, starting by the end of this month.Technical specifications include:

Samsung has rolled the marketing ball for the Galaxy Tab. It has put up a 2 minute promo video which shows what the device can do, all with lots of happy faces and horribly satisfied customers..

This Android powered tablet features a 1Ghz Cortex A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage, with an expansion MicroSD card slot for up to an additional 32GB of storage. The Galaxy Tab comes with a 1.3MP front-facing camera and a 3MP rear camera with LED flash, perfect for taking images in the dark.

The device also comes with a 4,000mAh battery, good for up to 7 hours of battery life. The Galaxy Tab is 3G data-ready, and has a 5Ghz dual-band 802.11n WiFi built-in card. The tablet also has a speaker on the bottom of the device, similar to the iPad, and supports Bluetooth. The Galaxy Tab has a 30-pin dock connector port on the bottom of the device, that allows HDMI, USB and other accessories for docking or adding onto the tablet, all fitted into a 7-inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 (WSVGA). Crazy just crazy, so this news is obviously for the server-market but apparantly Samsung can cram 32GB memory on a DIMM module.

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun shipping samples of the industry’s highest-density memory module for server systems. The 32 gigabyte (GB) module has been designed for use in advanced servers, which require high-density and high-performance features at low-power consumption levels.

Samsung is using the industries highest-density monolithic DDR3 device – a 40-nanometer (nm) class, four gigabit (Gb) DDR3 chip – as the building block for the new 32GB module. This comes just one year after the company announced its 50nm-class 2Gb based, 16GB registered dual inline memory module (RDIMM) last March.

The highly-efficient 32GB RDIMM consists of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips that can perform at equal or greater levels to a 40nm-based 16GB RDIMM with no increase in power consumption. By equipping a dual CPU, two-way server with 32GB modules, a server system can have up to 384GB of memory. This allows for doubling the previously largest density of 192GBs per server with a power increase of less than five percent over that needed for a 16GB module-based system.

In addition, replacing 12 DRAM modules of 16GB density with just six 32GB modules would achieve a 192GB total density, while allowing the DRAM operating speed in a two-way server system to rise by 33 percent from 800 megabit per second (Mbps) to 1,066 Mbps, as power is cut by 40 percent.

In high-performance, four-way servers using 16GB modules, one terabyte of DRAM would be commonplace.By using 32GB RDIMMs, Samsung is moving toward providing four-way servers with 2TB of DRAM each, a migration that it believes will spur introduction of diverse software and a broader scale of server applications.

Mass production of the 32GB RDIMM is slated to begin next month.

Samsung have invested “millions” of dollars into SSD storage firm Fusion-io, with the two companies looking to work more closely on solid-state memory applications in future. Fusion-io are responsible for a range of SSDs that slot into a desktop PCI slot rather than using a SATA channel.

While not usually intended for use as a primary, e.g. boot drive, they make for incredibly fast serving of data: the ioDrive Duo, for instance, offers 1.28TB of storage and read rates of up to 1,500MB/sec.

Samsung is already one of Fusion-io’s NAND flash suppliers, and in fact provides the company with the bulk of their memory chips. Neither company have revealed the extent of the investment, nor made clear what the partnership expect to work on first.

The new Extreme Series X256 drive offers sequential read speed up to 240MB/s and sequential write speed up to 170MB/s. The drive is equipped with an Indilinx Barefoot controller and uses Samsung multi-level cell NAND flash memory along with 64MB of on-board cache to eliminate any stutter issues.

Corsair already offers 32-, 64- and 128GB models in the Extreme series and all of the models come with upgradable firmware that will enable end-users to add new features such as the TRIM function when it becomes available in Windows 7 which will help users avoid the performance degradation that have plagued some drives over time.

Corsair stated the drives are available now from its resellers with no official word on price, although several online retailers are currently offering the drives in the $670-$680US range.
