Corsair presents three new Force series solid state disks, with a capacity of 60GB, 120GB and 240GB. These disks promise read speeds of up to 285MB/s, write speeds of up to 275MB/s and random 4K write performance of up to 15,000 IOPS (for the F60 and F120).

Corsair®, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced three additions to its ultra high-speed Force Series™ SSDs. The additions to this product family include the F60, F120, and F240 Force Series SSDs, sporting densities of 60GB, 120GB, and 240GB respectively.

All Corsair Force Series SSDs are built using the Sandforce SF-1200 SSD Processors, which provide unparalleled write endurance, superior ECC data protection, and outstanding performance. Corsair engineers worked closely with Sandforce to implement and qualify firmware which guarantees the unusually fast 4K random write performance of 180 MB/s, measured using the ATTO benchmark. This elevated 4K write speed generates 15K IOPs, resulting in excellent system performance and responsiveness. All Force Series SSDs implement the ATA TRIM command, supported by Windows® 7, which helps to maintain optimal performance over the drive’s lifetime.

The F60, F120, and F240 Force Series SSDs all support the maximum throughput specification of 285MB/s read and 275MB/s write. OCZ is expected to introduce its Enyo USB 3.0 solid state disk by mid-May. This device will ship in capacities of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, and the faster models promises read speeds of up to 260MB/s and write speeds of up to 200MB/s. Pricing is expected to be in the range of the SandForce-based Vertex 2 SSD, likely slightly higher.

The OCZ Enyo will be available in 64, 128 and 256GB volume sizes and all three drives use MLC NAND flash memory, have 64MB of on board cache and USB 3.0 Micro B connector interface.

Since we are talking about a USB 3.0 SSD-based external drive, you can expect speeds of up to 260MB/s for read and up to 200MB/s for write, with sustained speeds of up to 150MB/s for 128GB and 256GB versions. The 64GB one will have a bit lower speeds of up to 225MB/s for read and up to 135MB/s for write with sustained write of up to 40MB/s.

Quietly working on a new SSD controller for the past three years, SandForce announced a new family of solid-state disk (SSD) processors, the SF-1000, today.

According to the company based in Saratoga, California, this new technology is supposed to “address the inherent endurance, reliability, and data retention issues associated with NAND flash memory, making it possible to build SSDs that deliver unprecedented performance over the life of the drive with orders-of-magnitude higher reliability than enterprise-class HDDs (Hard Disk Drives).”

“The SF-1000 SSD Processor Family promises to address key NAND flash issues allowing MLC flash technologies to be reliably used in broad based, mission critical storage environments,” said Mike Desens, Vice President for System Design, IBM.

SandForce claims that this new controller can improve MLC sequential read/writes to 250MB/sec., while it’s new firmware DuraWrite, supposedly extends “flash rated endurance by 80x or more when compared to standard controllers.”

Another part of its new technology is called RAISE “(Redundant Array of Independent Silicon Elements), which delivers an orders-of-magnitude improvement in drive reliability versus today’s SSDs and enterprise HDDs. The result is single-drive RAID-like protection and recovery from a potentially catastrophic single flash block or die failure – all while avoiding the inefficiencies of traditional RAID.”

“With RAISE, we can recover, even if a complete die fails, or up to 32Gbits of data can fail and we can recreate it,” Kent Smith, senior director of product marketing at SandForce, said.

“SF-1000 Enterprise and Mobile Computing SSD Processors will be available in prototype quantities later in the second calendar quarter of 2009. SF-1000 Evaluation SSDs and reference designs in standard 2.5” drive form factors will also be available using multiple manufacturers’ NAND flash memory.”
