Adding another item to its successful Eee family, Asus revealed the EeeNAS PC at the current CeBit in Hannover, Germany. The network attached storage server, features 2TB of storage capacity, a 3.5-inch touchscreen display for basic controlling of the device, a sloat-loading DVD-Burner, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and is supposed to be whisper quiet with only 28dB noise output. Obviously, it works both as a media server, as well as a backup device. [via SlashGear]

Jen-Hsun Huang stated over at the GPU Technology Conference that CUDA (the general-purpose computing language for NVIDIA GPUs) will be ported directly to x86 chips. The approach developed with the Portland Group will let systems without NVIDIA cards handle the code. It will work best with multi-core processors and is seen as ideal for servers.

A timetable isn’t yet available for when CUDA will be ready to make the switch or which platforms will have direct access to x86. Both Mac OS X and Windows have native CUDA support and may get the added support relatively soon.

The move is potentially a hedge against universal standards. Both Microsoft’s DirectCompute and the more universal OpenCL don’t require a graphics chipset to run. Concepts of general-purpose computing languages came about to help calculate physics and other advanced math in parallel rather than depend solely on a single stream of code.

If you don’t have a GPU cluster handy, you can run your CUDA code directly on the CPU for testing and debugging, and even deploy it to users who don’t have suitable GPU’s. Of course, you’ll need the GPU for optimum performance, but it makes CUDA not just an NVidia technology, but a technology that runs on any computer.

Mind you that it was confirmed that this will not be a free offering, but rather a commercial product marketed and sold by PGI.

Crazy just crazy, so this news is obviously for the server-market but apparantly Samsung can cram 32GB memory on a DIMM module.

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun shipping samples of the industry’s highest-density memory module for server systems. The 32 gigabyte (GB) module has been designed for use in advanced servers, which require high-density and high-performance features at low-power consumption levels.

Samsung is using the industries highest-density monolithic DDR3 device – a 40-nanometer (nm) class, four gigabit (Gb) DDR3 chip – as the building block for the new 32GB module. This comes just one year after the company announced its 50nm-class 2Gb based, 16GB registered dual inline memory module (RDIMM) last March.

The highly-efficient 32GB RDIMM consists of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips that can perform at equal or greater levels to a 40nm-based 16GB RDIMM with no increase in power consumption. By equipping a dual CPU, two-way server with 32GB modules, a server system can have up to 384GB of memory. This allows for doubling the previously largest density of 192GBs per server with a power increase of less than five percent over that needed for a 16GB module-based system.

In addition, replacing 12 DRAM modules of 16GB density with just six 32GB modules would achieve a 192GB total density, while allowing the DRAM operating speed in a two-way server system to rise by 33 percent from 800 megabit per second (Mbps) to 1,066 Mbps, as power is cut by 40 percent.

In high-performance, four-way servers using 16GB modules, one terabyte of DRAM would be commonplace.By using 32GB RDIMMs, Samsung is moving toward providing four-way servers with 2TB of DRAM each, a migration that it believes will spur introduction of diverse software and a broader scale of server applications.

Mass production of the 32GB RDIMM is slated to begin next month.

Alongside a 6-core launch for consumers, in the enterprise segment Intel will start shipping eight-core Nehalem-EX processors this month already. The pending 8-core Xeons will be able to run in four-socket servers and, by leveraging the two threads of each core, the logical CPU count can reach 64 cores on a single system.

This high scalability is complemented by 256KB L2 dedicated cache memory for each core, a shared L3 cache of 24MB and even Turbo Boost technology, which can disable unused cores in order to safely and effectively boost the heavily used ones. The 8-core also has a memory controller with four DDR3 memory channels and is built on the 45nm HKMG process (it is based on the Nehalem architecture).

The 8-cores will make their official debut later this month. In addition, Intel is preparing to formally add its Westmere-EP processors around the same time. These will be based on the 32nm Westmere process and will likely have six cores (aimed at two-socket servers), a 12MB L3 cache and three DDR3 channels.

COMPUTEX 2009—TAIPEI, TAIWAN—JUNE 1, 2009—NVIDIA Corporation and Supermicro today announced the immediate availability of a new class of server that combines massively parallel NVIDIA® Tesla™ GPUs with multi-core CPUs in a single 1U rack-mount server.

This unique configuration delivers 12 times the performance of a traditional quad-core CPU-based 1U server.

“Our new Tesla GPU-based SuperServer 6016T-GF Series delivers a much higher performance-per-watt and per-rack than any other 1U solution in the market today,” stated Don Clegg, Vice President of Marketing, Supermicro. “This 2-Teraflop SuperServer meets the most demanding enterprise data center requirements for reliability and manageability.”

Based on the same award-winning NVIDIA CUDA™ architecture as other Tesla GPU-based solutions, these new servers offer unprecedented levels of integration and reliability for enterprise-class users. In addition, the GPU can be tied directly into the remote monitoring capabilities of the server for significantly improved system level management.

Petrobras, the leading Brazilian International Energy company, recently spoke about its reliance on Tesla GPUs to increase the performance of their seismic codes. Petrobras has recently invested in a GPU-based cluster consisting of 190 NVIDIA Tesla GPU Computing processors for scientific parallel processing, with transformative results:

“With our GPU cluster we are getting performance improvements of 5x to 20x over our traditional multi-core CPU-based cluster,” said Neiva Zago, Geophysical Technology Manager, Petrobras. “We expect that the continued use of GPUs in our business will result in significant reduction in processing time as well as savings in power consumption and datacenter floor space.”

Petrobras expects scalable increases in GPU performance will continue as they build out their datacenter to deliver more than 400 TFLOPS.
