CompactFlash stalwart PhotoFast has unveiled its all-new PowerDrive, which claims it can read your data at 1.4GBps and write it at an even faster 1.5GBps. That’s the rough equivalent of reading two full CDs’ content every second! Need we say more? The PowerDrive’s speed puts the stinking fast Fusion-io ioXtreme to shame, humbles PhotoFast’s own 1GBps G-Monster, and matches OCZ’s otherworldly Z-Drive. The supported OS list includes a nice selection of Linux flavors as well, and sizes stretch from 240GB up to 960GB.

Intended for the corporate market OCZ announces the Company’s plan to enter mass production of the Z-Drive R2 Solid State Drive (SSD) Series, the second rendition of the original Z-Drive family. The Z-Drive R2 builds on the existing solution but provides greater performance and design flexibility due to the implementation of a series of optimized NAND modules.

The innovative Z-Drive R2 SSD maximizes bandwidth by taking the SATA bottleneck out of the equation and utilizes the speed advantages of the PCI-Express interface. Unlike competing solutions, the Z-Drive family is bootable and with 8 PCI-E lanes and an eight-way RAID 0 configuration, the R2 delivers performance ideal for enterprise applications that are limited by HDD technology. What also makes the R2 especially exceptional is the use of interchangeable modules in the place of permanent, surface-mounted NAND; this unique feature-set is designed to make the Z-Drive field-serviceable and field-upgradeable.

Addressing the emerging performance demands of storage area networks (SANs), workstations, and servers, the Z-Drive R2 creates new possibilities in enterprise data management. The R2 delivers extremely fast transfer rates up to 1.4 GB/s, while offering enhanced reliability and durability compared to mechanical hard drives.

About one month ago, we spotted OCZ’s Z-Drive at the CeBIT in Hanover, Germany. The exciting detail about the Z-Drive is that it is a PCI-Express x8 connection storage device on a 245 mm x 124mm x 22 mm board that boasts up to four 256 GB (MLC-equipped) solid-state drives in a RAID 0 setup.

Well, it seems like the French e-tailer Materiel already offers them for sale on its web site. Not one, not two, but three different models are currently being sold:

* The 1 TB version, Z-Drive 1 To PCI-Express 8x, features up to 500 MB/s read speed and up to 470 MB/s write speed. These incredible speeds come budled with a hefty price tag, though: 3,399.99 Euro. 256 MB on-board cache and four MLC SSDs with 250 GB per SSD are the ingredients that can be found under the hood of this version.

* Next is the Z-Drive 500 Go PCI-Express 8x, with 500 GB of storage space and up to 510 MB/s read speed and up to 480 MB/s write speed. This means that it is actually a tad faster than the 1 TB version. This model will set you back 2,199.99 Euro.

* Last, but certainly not least, is the Z-Drive 250 Go PCI-Express 8x, with 250 GB of storage space and still up to 450 MB/s read speed and up to 300 MB/s write speed. This version currently costs 1,399.99 Euro.

Whether these prices are the final MSRPs or if they are slightly inflated, remains to be seen, when these amazing drives start to appear at other shops, as well.
