ADATA released the S596 Turbo. This SSD comes with the new JMicron JMF616 controller which packs 128MB DDR2 cache. The results should be a stutter free SSD with read speeds of up to 260MB/s and write speeds of up to 210MB/s.

Patriot Memory announced the immediate availability of the Inferno series to its family of solid-state-drives (SSDs). The Inferno series of SSD offer blazing fast transfer speeds, improved system responsiveness, quicker boot times, and shorter application loading times over traditional hard disk drive storage solutions.

OCZ CEO Ryan Petersen says that he expects that in five years from now the price per gigabyte of solid state disks will almost match the price per gigabyte of hard disk drives.

At present SSDs are used in conjunction with hard drives in order to reduce boot-up time and accelerate performance of frequently used programs. However, that is going to change in the future as the price of flash will get closer to that of hard drives in terms of per gigabyte cost.

“This dual usage pairing an SSD as a boot drive with a HDD for mass storage will persist during the transition period, but as you move three to five years out the prices per gigabyte for SSDs will continue to get closer. As the delta decreases, adoption of SSDs will only increase and we will definitely see this transition in PCs,” said Ryan Petersen, chief executive officer of OCZ Technology, in a brief interview with X-bit labs.

Microsoft’s Silverlight (a direct competitor of Adobe’s Flash) got its third version released. This is ahead of the originally planned release date.

Since MS pushed Silverlight out the door there have been many companies that have adopted the new standard. One of the biggest was the adoption by Netflix for use in its streaming player.

This new version brings in over 50 improvements including adding support for Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming and GPU acceleration (I bet the gang at nVidia are happy).

Smooth Streaming is probably going to have the biggest impact as it can allow for streaming of 720p video with no buffering. This is simply an amazing feat and one that is being integrated into the Zune HD and was used at the Jackson Memorial.

If this new version of Silverlight is any indication Adobe has its work cut out for them.
