Although this is more Apple news it seems that there is a flaw (everyone stop to gasp) in the new iPhone OS 3.0 Software. This flaw revolves around how the iPhone handles SMS messaging.

According to very limited details it seems that the undisclosed flaw could allow malicious code to be inserted giving an evildoer root access to the thermally challenged device.

Charlie Miller, the person who discovered the flaw went on to say that despite the SMS flaw that the iPhone OS is still very secure. He praised Apple’s decision to remove Flash and Java (despite advertising a full and “real” internet experience) stating that they are potential vectors for attack.

Others disagree with Mr. Miller as there are always ways to protect from flaws in add-ons and say that Apple’s removal of these features, requiring signed code and restricting applications is just a way to control the phone and of course generate more revenue.

With the release of the SDK for iPhone OS 3.1 and the beta version of the OS we know that Apple will be releasing that sometime very soon (rumors put it out on July 17th). Although many other fixes and features were mentioned with the new OS, this was one that got past the official release.

The iPhone has become an icon in popular culture. The iPhone, along with its sibling, the iPod, are woven into our view of the world. As a device it is sleek and sexy. It has a great sense of style and shows that while Apple may do many things wrong, they at least do them with style and flare.

From its launch the iPhone has been poked at and prodded, reviewed and tested. The latest launch is nothing new; there have been all kinds of comparisons of the iPhone 3GS and individual tests ran to determine how much better it is than the older iPhones.

The new iPhone OS has made its way to many a happy iPhone user. This is a good thing as it means that iPhone users can now finally join the ranks of other smart phone owners with such exciting features as Copy and Paste, Tethering and Voice control.

But with these come some interesting extras. Apparently hidden in the new update are 45 patches that cover vulnerabilities in the old iPhone OS. This would seem to fly in the face of Apple’s normal stance of “our hardware and software is completely secure”.

Do not get me wrong, I think the inclusion of fixes and security patches is great and Apple is doing the right thing by making sure they get out to iPhone owners. I just wish they would knock off the BS that OS X and iPhone OS are more secure than other operating systems out.

Most users would not notice them because they were issued as part of the iPhone 3.0 operating system.

While the tame Mac press rushed to praise Apple for its “stellar security” reputation it had to admit that 45 is a large number when it comes to counting patches.

If it were Microsoft releasing this many the Mac Fanbois would be dribbling with bile by now. Linux fanbois would just laugh at them both, of course.

Although Apple has kept a tight lid on almost everything associated with the upcoming new version of the iPhone, a source close to Apple’s hardware development team says that the third-generation iPhone will be coming on Friday, July 17.

Many are eagerly awaiting the new iPhone and the new features that it is rumored to be bringing along with it. Some of the more notable features include double the RAM and processing power, a 32GB model, 3.2MP camera with video capabilities, a compass, and an FM transmitter. Unfortunately it is also very likely that the $199 and $299 prices will remain the same.

Of course Apple has not verified any of the information yet, all of this is from various leaks that have popped up over the last few months. As always we will have to wait to hear from Apple for the official word and confirmation, however many of the changes would fit the iPhone quite well and are all very plausible. Confirmation could be right around the corner as VP Schiller will be opening the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on June 8th with a keynote address.

A source closely connected to Apple’s hardware team claims to possess knowledge of the next-generation iPhone’s specifications and release date.

The source told iPhone fan blog Apple iPhone Apps that the new iPhone will launch July 17. Many of the provided specifications corroborate with past rumors that the device will introduce a digital compass and a video recorder, among other features.

Here’s the list:

* 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
* $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
* 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
* Video-recording and editing capabilities
* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
* OLED screen
* 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
* Double the RAM and processing power
* Built-in FM transmitter
* Apple logo on back will glow
* Rubber-tread backing
* Sleeker design
* Built-in compass
* The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
* Turn-by-turn directions

Overall, if these claims are true, this is a relatively minor upgrade. The most notable new features would be the built-in compass (which appeared in earlier rumor reports), the video recorder and editor (the current iPhones don’t support video recording unless you Jailbreak them), the built-in FM transmitter and the OLED screen (which would improve battery life).

One of the features that sticks out to me is the built-in FM transmitter. I see no compelling reason for Apple to put this in the iPhone, as it is not a feature that users have been demanding, and it hasn’t appeared in other iPods.

Another specification I find strange is the OLED screen. That would be a welcome change because it would look nicer than the current LED screen. But OLEDs are generally pricey, and if the current price points are maintained, I’m not sure if I believe this one.

We’d already heard that evidence of a new iPhone model was found buried in newer firmwares, but how about two new iPhone models — along with a couple new iPod touches thrown in for good measure? It seems that a careful deconstruction of the beta 3.0 build provided to developers this week has uncovered the same product code “iPhone2,1″ found before in addition to an even newer, awesomer “iPhone3,0.”

For the record, the iPhone 3G is identified as “iPhone1,2,” so these alleged new models would be the first in the iPhone line to be blessed with major version number increments. Turning our attention to the iPod touch, the current model carries the “iPod2,1″ designation, but models “iPod2,2″ and “iPod3,1″ have both been rooted out of the binary. June is widely speculated as the time that we’d be seeing new iPhone models — right about the time that 3.0 is released to the general public — so we don’t have terribly long to wait to get this sorted out.
