Microsoft Corp is developing a feature in its new operating system that allows users to turn off Internet Explorer and other key Microsoft programs.

The new feature is a major step for the world’s largest software company, which has been accused by competitors and regulators of forcing consumers to run its own software, squeezing rivals’ offerings out of the marketplace.

“In addition to the features that were already available to turn on or off in Windows Vista, we’ve added the following features to the list in Windows 7,” said a Microsoft blog published on Friday, listing Internet Explorer 8, Windows Media Player and a host of other Microsoft programs.

turning-windows-features-on-or-off.aspx) was written by Jack May o, a manager in the team developing Microsoft’s new Windows 7 operating system, which will replace the unpopular Vista early next year.

The new design will make it easier for users to remove any traces of Internet Explorer from their desktop, although the software will remain installed on the computer, and allow them to run other browsers more smoothly.

Last month Google Inc, which recently launched its own Chrome browser, joined the Mozilla foundation, producer of the Firefox Web browser, and Norway’s Opera, in protesting Microsoft’s dominance in the browser market.

In January, European regulators brought formal charges against Microsoft for abusing its dominant market position by bundling its Internet Explorer Web browser with its Windows operating system, which is used in 95 percent of the world’s personal computers.

In the past decade, Microsoft has fallen afoul of both U.S. and European antitrust regulators for bundling key programs with its operating system.

Maybe, just maybe, Microsoft is going to make Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7 removable, after all. An early sign for this possiblity can be found in the latest build, 7048, of Windows 7. Using the Windows Features dialog box, users discovered the option to remove the actual executable of Internet Explorer 8. Interestingly enough, this feature wasn’t available in the public Beta version of Windows 7.

Whether this is a result of the currently ongoing antitrust investigation of Microsoft in the EU right now, or not, is unclear, as an official statement from Microsoft is missing regarding that matter, so far.

The European Union is investigating Microsoft for potentially abusing its monopolistic position to drive Internet Explorer’s market share.

Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, wrote in an email that Microsoft’s upcoming operating system, Windows 7, will not have native Blu-Ray playback support. Despite that, you will be able to burn Blu-Ray discs as an integrated feature though.

This means that you still will be required to buy dedicated software like Power DVD, for example, to watch Blu-Ray movies in Windows 7. On the other hand, OEMs and Blu-Ray drive makers will be able to extend the Windows Media Center, in order to support Blu-Ray playback by means of a codec.

“Blu-Ray support will be provided by PC makers or BRD drive makers. We have new extensibility in media center for those that provide BRD playback to support integrated playback. We do have support for burning BRD data discs,” Sinofsky wrote.

After looking through all the feedback Windows 7′s public beta version received, Microsoft added 36 changes to its Release Candidate. While some of them are only of “cosmetic” nature, others are quite essential and increased performance and various compatibility fixes are only two of the many benefits you can expect to see.

Apparently, Microsoft is being careful this time around though, and tries not to repeat mistakes it previously made with Vista. Therefore, don’t expect any drastic changes or even a radical remodeling of Windows 7.

The main focus was on the desktop, as it accounts for 10 of the 36 changes. Also noteworthy is the increased audio reliability and the added .mov support, as we already reported earlier. Windows 7 already has built in DivX support in the current beta. Hidden inside the various changes since beta for the RC is a change to Windows Media Player to natively support the .mov files.

Yeah, the support for .mov files was mentioned deep in a long list of changes that are coming to the Windows 7 Release Candidate. While this may delight owners of cameras which output in the .mov format, it’s also good news for anyone who enjoys watching movies on their PC, as movie trailers, particularly those on Apple Movie Trailers, come in .mov format, and so require QuickTime (or a freeware player such as VLC) to view.

Now, if WMP would have native support for GPU acceleration on all formats as well, I’d be such a happy puppy (cute too).

All of you, who are eagerly awaiting the release of Windows 7, might like the following statement, made by Ray Chen, president of Taipei-based Compal Electronics Inc., at an investor’s conference today.

Regarding the question when it is being shipped with PCs, he said: “According to current planning, it should be late September or early October.” Compal builds laptops for Hewlett-Packard and Acer, among others.

This is interesting news, as Microsoft officially talks only about January 2010 as a release date for Windows 7, so far. This somewhat conservative date might be used as a cushion to soften any unexpected delays in its current development process, though. Therefore, recent news about Microsoft’s announcement of only one public beta and one RC before the RTM version would support the statement Chen made today.

The current beta version of Windows 7 seems to be surprisingly stable and well performing already and received prevalently good reviews throughout the whole IT community during the last weeks and months.

Microsoft’s near-final Release Candidate version of Windows 7 could be due in less than two months, says a source within Microsoft. The company is reportedly making progress according to its exact schedule and will purportedly launch the RC build for both testers and the public on April 10th.

The update would come just three months after the public beta build and would give Microsoft a full eight months to produce the fully finished version that represents the last milestone.

The company has long promised a shortened development schedule for Windows 7 but has publicly insisted that it doesn’t anticipate a release before early 2010, or three years after Vista’s release. The quickened RC process, if not struck with delays, hints that the company fully intends an accelerated launch that would have the software released by the end of 2009. Multiple leaks and other clues have suggested that a production version will be ready by July to ensure that PCs are ready with the major upgrade before the holidays.

While considered stable, the sped-up OS release is believed prompted by a continued hostile perception of Vista that sees multiple PC makers selling XP downgrades several months after the 2001 software was to have left the market. Business reception has also been cold with just a fraction of companies having installed Vista two years since its release.

This is a new driver release for the 260 family of drivers. This driver package supports GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, and 400-series desktop GPUs as well as ION desktop GPUs.
